Preschool Program
Our weekday children’s programs are an important part of the outreach ministry of First United Methodist Church. In 2008, we have grown to an enrollment of over 80 preschool and just over 70 elementary age children. For many of our children and families, the Child Care may offer the only opportunity to experience the love of Jesus Christ.

The FUMC Child Care fully adopts the philosophy of the Creative Curriculum which incorporates the belief that young children learn best by doing. Learning is not just imitating the actions of another; it requires active thinking and experimenting to find out how things work and to learn firsthand about the world in which we live.
One of the most important aspects of the preschool curriculum is to help children become excited about learning. The daily program of the Child Care addresses this as a priority and strives to provide an environment which offers many opportunities for creativity, self-expression and socialization.
The teacher’s role in the learning process is to facilitate and participate in a well-rounded daily plan. Strong emphasis is placed on the use of thematic units and learning centers. Children are exposed to an educational environment promoting language development, science & mathematical awareness, art, music and self-awareness.
Partners in the Process
In the fall of 2006, our Child Care began a three-year covenant agreement with United Way to establish a Success by Six 4K program. This partnership arrangement has been an invaluable enhancement for the preschool program. Success by Six has provided not only tangible classroom resources but made resource advisors readily available for parents and teachers.
Last year we were awarded an Emergent Grant from the Office of School Readiness (OSR). These funds made possible the expansion of the reading center in the 4K classroom and additional teacher training. The OSR has also provided support and assessment services.
The FUMC Child Care is also a member of ALUMAP (Alabama United Methodist Association of Preschools), which was founded as an initiative to foster high quality preschool programs and annually provides training on current issues and child development fundamentals.
